Not Enough Kittens
For the first of the three projects I based my work off of Erwin Wurm. He is known for creating what are called "one minute sculptures" in which a participant becomes part of the sculpture along with everyday objects close at hand, and are then photographed. His sculptures I found quite humorous.
One image that I really liked was one in which a man has pens and markers in his ears and nose, along with a stapler in his mouth and film containers in his eyes. For my own one minute sculpture I invited my roommate Kim to become a kitten sticker collage, since I'd found a whole book of them in my closet.
I Chase People With Pumpkins
Project number 2 was a bit trickier, and a bit farther from my comfort zone. This next one was based off of the work of Lilly McElroy. I really really dig her work; she definitely puts herself and other people in such awkward or startling situations, and her photographs and videos are quite entertaining to look through. Her series "I throw myself at men" was a starting point for my own project. Mine though turned into "I chase people with pumpkins." It was quite awkward, for everyone.
It really freaked people at, running at them with a pumpkin. It was hard to keep a straight face! Unfortunately, the very best reaction was from the first guy I chased, in which I really put my game face on and bolted straight at him. He got really startled and quite angry, and told me how NOT funny it was. The cameraman happened to not be on it and so it didn't get documented, but man his face was priceless!
I also almost got hit by a group of 3 bikers, which also would have made for an excellent picture.
Relocating
My 3rd public intervention piece is based from Lee Walton's piece, Relocating. Since I wasn't feeling too well, instead of taking this one to the streets I decided I would relocate my roommates' things in the kitchen into the living room, and leave it there to see how they react when they see it. There are 8 of us total in one house, so it would be somewhat of a mystery as to who did it!
And lastly, for my in-class piece, I was in the library and noticed a big reg recycling bin along with a big sign next to it saying USE THE RED BIN. So I did....
