Flyer
Bi Polar Bear
Hawthorne Theater, Friday Oct. 22.
Drums : Haley Rhodes
Bass: Simon Green
Guitar: Miles Kruegar
Keyboard: Chase Finnigan
If you happened to find yourself at the Hawthorne Theater on Friday night, then you took part in a magically epic experience that will not soon be forgotten. For those of you who didn’t make it to the Album Release Party of local band Bi Polar Bear, you missed out! The party kicked off right with upbeat, dirty, and driving songs “Prey” and “Sub Zero“ . The dance floor was maxed to full capacity for the climax of “Get Some “as Haley and Simon dominated the rhythm section. “Hibernation” slightly lowered heart rates into mind expanding melodies brought in from Chase on the keys and Miles on guitar. The magic continued on with songs such as “24 hours of darkness,” “Far end of the Earth,” and “Omnivore.” Bi Polar Bear has come a long way within this past year, progressively evolving into a heavier sound though still incorporating the Jazz influence from which this band originally started out with. From Bi Polar Bear you can expect to hear melodic jazzy undertows in an all-around rock sound, with even bouts of heavy metal thrown into the mix. What keeps me coming back for more is the variety and energy that this band brings to the stage every time, and that they are constantly incorporating new and creative sounds with every show. Their ever growing fan base is just as varied, with followers from every crowd. Glaciers, their newest album is a definite hit in my book, so don’t miss out on their next show here in Portland at the Doug Fir lounge December 3rd.

Least Favorite Songs
I found it somewhat difficult to come up with my least favorite songs. I think I tend to block them from my head for the most part...
1. My Humps by Black Eyed Peas
The lyrics are terrible, the music is nothing interesting.
2. I Gotta Feeling by Black Eyed Peas
They say "tonight's gonna be a good night" way too many times. Lyrics are not creative or impressive
3. Buy UA Drink by T-Pain
The lyrics are so dumb. It is also obviously auto-tuned.
4. Who Says You Can't Go Home by Bon Jovi
For some reason I kept hearing this song everywhere when it came out, and it just drove me nuts. Not a Bon Jovi fan.
5. Someday by Nickleback.
It's one of those overly played mediocre songs. Very annoying.
6. The Hokey Pokey
It was never that fun to do the Hokey Pokey in elementary school, and the song just gets stuck in your head.
7. It's Peanut Butter Jelly Time!
This song is extremely annoying and gets stuck in your head!
8. The Song That Never Ends
Pretty self explanatory, it gets stuck in your head and never ends...
9. Barbie Girl by Aqua.
So annoying!!! So dumb!

Public Intervention Art
Previously I was not too aware of many public intervention artists, and so this week I found interesting in being able to explore this realm of art a bit more. When it came to doing my own public intervention art though, I knew in the beginning that it is definitely not my strong point, yet I wound up having some fun with it.
Not Enough Kittens
For the first of the three projects I based my work off of Erwin Wurm. He is known for creating what are called "one minute sculptures" in which a participant becomes part of the sculpture along with everyday objects close at hand, and are then photographed. His sculptures I found quite humorous.
One image that I really liked was one in which a man has pens and markers in his ears and nose, along with a stapler in his mouth and film containers in his eyes. For my own one minute sculpture I invited my roommate Kim to become a kitten sticker collage, since I'd found a whole book of them in my closet.
I Chase People With Pumpkins
Project number 2 was a bit trickier, and a bit farther from my comfort zone. This next one was based off of the work of Lilly McElroy. I really really dig her work; she definitely puts herself and other people in such awkward or startling situations, and her photographs and videos are quite entertaining to look through. Her series "I throw myself at men" was a starting point for my own project. Mine though turned into "I chase people with pumpkins." It was quite awkward, for everyone.

It really freaked people at, running at them with a pumpkin. It was hard to keep a straight face! Unfortunately, the very best reaction was from the first guy I chased, in which I really put my game face on and bolted straight at him. He got really startled and quite angry, and told me how NOT funny it was. The cameraman happened to not be on it and so it didn't get documented, but man his face was priceless!
I also almost got hit by a group of 3 bikers, which also would have made for an excellent picture.
Relocating
My 3rd public intervention piece is based from Lee Walton's piece, Relocating. Since I wasn't feeling too well, instead of taking this one to the streets I decided I would relocate my roommates' things in the kitchen into the living room, and leave it there to see how they react when they see it. There are 8 of us total in one house, so it would be somewhat of a mystery as to who did it!
And lastly, for my in-class piece, I was in the library and noticed a big reg recycling bin along with a big sign next to it saying USE THE RED BIN. So I did....

My childhood home
Building my childhood home turned out to be a bit more difficult than originally perceived. Building with cardboard for one thing is not entirely easy for me, but the most difficult aspect was trying to remember exactly how my house looked from the outside. I didn’t have access to a picture at the time, and Google Earth failed to work properly on my computer. So in all honesty I built what it was I could remember, which was a blue house with a single room second story, yet I know that there are many details I left out, such as getting the number of windows right, and leaving out the second ground floor bathroom added on, for example. The house when we first moved in was only a 2 bedroom, 1 bath. Over the years of living there it transformed into a 4 bedroom 3 bath, with a front and back deck, which was quite necessary for a family of 7, especially with us kids all getting older.
When constructing the blueprint of my home, I think I did a fairly good job. For some reason the hardest rooms to remember the layout of were my parent’s room, and the living room. The living room I think was difficult because it changed quite often. My parent’s room I could remember their bed and the computer desk, yet lamps and dressers and everything I just couldn’t picture. Same goes for my two younger brother’s rooms, since the layout changed often there as well.
I really do like that house, and have so many great memories that came back to me while working on this project, yet it also came as a surprise as to how much I’d forgotten about it as well.
ME: Hey mom, what is a very memorable incident from the greeley house that you can think of?
lets see......one christmas when I brought tim home from the hospital, the roof was off the house covered in tarp because we were building an upper story, and we had no heat and all slept in front of the wood stove on a futon, AND all of you kids broke out with chicken pox....it was about 5 degrees.........
your cousin Wes put green army men on top of the wood stove and they all melted...one he picked up quickly and flung it...landed on Thomas' foot and burned him.
you and kristin found a bird in the woodstove one morning :)
car got stolen when i started it one night and came into say goodbye before i worked a nite shift. some dude that was hanging out at Juniper women's locker room was being chased by cops. It was involved in a downtown chase and crashed by the old stone church.... a bunch of wrapped xmas gifts were in the trunk.
I used to watch you kids with binocculars from the front yard when you were playing at Juniper park playground.
If I think of any more, I'll let you know...
Megan Stumpfig October 7 at 1:13pm
Haha these are great. Which car was it that got stolen?
it was either a Jetta or a Passat that we had before the blue one. The guy who took it used all the ash tray $$ to go through taco bell, there were wrappers all over the car, and the presents were all opened, but nuthin valuable, just some kiddo toys............
You guys as kids were always soooo dissapointed on Halloween. All of our neighbors were old and never gave anything out :P Megan Stumpfig October 8 at 6:23pm
Hey mom, do you remember the two different times that a tree fell on our house?? I was pretty young, but I remember being somewhat excited when the first one fell since it just missed the house, though the second one that actually hit the house felt like an earthquake and really freaked me out! What do you remember from that?
yeah, the first one fell when i was over at juniper, working out and left you guys home alone....it kinda fell over our driveway..
The second one scared me too! It was at night, I don't think dad was home.............The house actually moved! I thought it was an earthquake too.... :) kinda freaky

How old were Kristin and I when we found the bird in the woodstove? Also, do you remember when we found that litter of kittens out by our trashcan?
shoot. I thousgt I responded to this. must not have sent it. I think you were 7 and kristin was 6. the bird was just sitting in the stove. you guyswatched it a while then you cupped it in your hands and after pettingg it's head for a while let it go outside. I remember those kittens. they had sores and pus onthem. do you remember all the wild cats that Von and Billie used to feed?
Also the house on the corner with all the kids used to come over almost every morning and ask to borrow milk or eggs or cereal....... and safeway was right down the street! One time the oldest kid asked to borrow Windex and paper towels to wash thee windows in his mom's car !

Haha ah man I don't remember a lot of that! Especially much of the corner kids, I didn't know those details haha. And the cats I don't remember at all having sores and pus all over them. In my mind they were just adorable kittens. I remember wanting to keep them and take care of them. :) A black one without a tail stuck around for a few days and kept trying to get into the house, until Iko ran it off I'm sure.
So how did you feel at the time about moving into a 2 bed 1 bath house with dad and 5 kids?
So how did you feel at the time about moving into a 2 bed 1 bath house with dad and 5 kids?
We moved in the greeley house in August...... Flip back a few months to march.... Dad had just gotten a new job working for WeatherShield Windows which would require him to be on the road 4-5 days a week; I got a job interview at the hospital in
Labor and Delivery, and that same day realized I was prego with Tim! I only missed my period 5 times in my life, lol.........Dad went off to train in Wisconsin, I started working and put 4 of you in various day cares (including Martha Hinman keeping you guys over nite when I worked)....
On days off I would pack all you kids in the Vanagon, and drive for hours all over Bend looking at neighborhoods and their vicinity. You and Thomas would moan...."oh no, shes looking at homes again"....hahahaha I would pull into Wendys and get food and then drive for the rest of the day, mapping out where a good place for us to live would be......I got pulled over for letting you kids walk in the van.....you would get tired of sitting in your seats :).
I kept comming back to the house on Greeley, and liked it because it was close to the park, and I wouldn't have to drive far to the park, pool, safeway, downtown, video store, etc..... Tommy Fords dad was the agent selling it, so thats how we got to know his family.
Yup, one bathroom, 2 bedrooms, living room and kitchen.....One storey.. No dishwasher.....I honestly don't know how I talked dad into getting that hous. I shoulda been a salesman !!! BUT the Park and the POOL were right THERE ! We bought it in June, Dad remodeled some of it in two weeks and we moved in in August...and got settled for Amity Creek, which by that time had moved down town to the Historic Bend High School......it took another 5 months to build on a second story......always bummed we didn't make it bigger up there........
We continued to remodel that house until we moved out.....you know, I was still finding areas that had 40 year old dirt under the carpeting....... Chucks (neighbor) father built our house, AB's and Chucks...........over 60 years ago ! I would love to make that a real cute modern house......If only the tree in the back continues on as magnificently as it has...........I alwo loved the back yard there. Such beautiful lilacs in the Summer....wonderful scent while they were blooming.....and the Plum trees that Chucks wife had planted. I made plum tarts every summer....YUM

Yea the lilacs where awesome. It was too bad when dad trimmed them one year and they didn't bloom! Haha I don't remember walking around in the van at all, but I do remember once when you got pulled over because I think it was Thomas and I were sitting in the backward seats when they were in the upright position, haha.
The pool and the park were really awesome, I probably went swimming almost every day one summer. It was also convenient when I played roller hockey, could just skate down to practice. Do you remember when I got hit in the head with a hockey puck one day? I remember skating along the outside of the rink, and I'm pretty sure it was Michael Harrison taking shots at the goal when one of them somehow flew straight in between the boards and the fencing above it, and hit me straight in the side of the head and knocked me down. It was pretty crazy!
What do you remember about how Iko joined the family?

It WAS Michael Harrison that shot that puck....Freakin' scary.....He's got a kid now...
I miss that hockey rink. It was quite fun, and we didn't have to drive there.
I'm trying to recall exactly when Iko showed up......We came back from visiting back east, when Tim was either 6 months old, or 18 months old...... '96 or '97. She just showed up, definitly just past kitten age...not quite adolescent. She was friendly and clean. We fed her some canned tuna, and let her in the house just "a little bit". Then we mentioned to Bille next door about the kitten, and she said it was hers........So we just said "oh........" and brought over some food we had bought it. Then Billie said she thought we were talking about some wild cats that were still around.....and let us know that the 'friendly cat' was not hers, and laughed. She was ours ever since.
I like to think that she chose us......She was always an inside/outside cat.........never had a litter box, and can't recall her messing in the house :) I don't remember her scratching anyone, do you?
Come to think of it, I think Tim was 18 months old at the time..Don't recall having a cat with a baby in the house....That would make Iko 13 this year :)

Yea Iko was a good kitty. Although us kids were definitely not the nicest to her, I remember a couple times Kristin and I putting our doll clothes on her. She haaated it...
What do you remember of Sydney? All I could remember of her were the good things, but you seem to have a much different recollection of her haha
What do you remember of Sydney? All I could remember of her were the good things, but you seem to have a much different recollection of her haha
You kids watched those 10 puppies across the street for weeks just longing for one of them...I kept saying no way, and dad would have none of it. When they had 3 left, 2 black one brown, I asked for the brown male and was told I had to take the larger of the black females as well....Two dogs wouldn't work so we took the smallest, Sydney...She was cute and all, but not too smart....or maybe I just couldn't handle 5 kids and a puppy and didn't know what I was doing.
She wouldn't stay around, and kept going over to the house with all the kids.. They would put their plastic garbage bags on their back porch; sydney would rip into them and eat all their garbage !! Then she'd come home and throw up and have diarrhea all over our house. I used to wake up in the morning and there would be shit all down the staircase!! She was still doing this after a year and a half!! Our back yard was a total shit yard.....I swear she crapped 5 times a day ! You guys were young, and couldn't really help, plus all of you just loved her :)
We had to go to Seattle one morning at 5 am, we were going to see some Hockey and were meeting Dad and Thomas up there. I got all the rest of you in the van and Sydney wouldn't come home after letting her out. We were to be gone all week and I was supposed to drop her off at some Doggy care place.....We were late, so I just left ! Told Billie and Von, and called one of the Zarazinski kids to take care of her when she got back....
When we got back, no one had seen her. You guys were sad, but secretly I was relieved... We went to the humane society and had no luck there, we put pix up at Safeway (she was found by the other family eating garbage there.....she loved garbage, lol). Anyway one day, you I think, Dad and others were at the park and saw a dad and two girls walking Sydney on a leash with a new collar............! They had remamed her Sophie. They did bring her to the humane society and left her there for 2 days and went back and adopted her! We were gone :( You guys were sad, but when Sydney/Sophie ran away from their house, she came to ours to play! Do you remember that? The Coopers lived about 3 streets over from us. They got a second Lab to be her companion, and finally calmed down when she was about 6 years old......
We just had too many young kids, and not enough back yard to have a dog at that time..............

Hey Krisitin, what are some memories you have from growing up in the Greeley house?
well i remember we would always play on the rope swings in the back yard and i loved the giant tree we had.we used to play with my pet hamster who is no longer with us anymore ;). we had a big drive way and we always would ride bikes back and forth to juniper park , fun stuff
Megan Stumpfig October 11 at 10:39am
Hey what was your hamsters name again? I can't even remember... I do remember picking him out for you at the pet store though! I think I was more upset than anyone else when it died haha.
Do you remember any of the fights that you and I, or that you had with michael thomas or tim?

I just remember one fight we had when you ripped the head off one of my barbies :( haha, I was so mad at that.
Do you have any good memories of when we had Sydney?

yeah the barbie :( it was bell from beauty the beast, i remeber sydney was really cute and had a little bit of white on her chest and we would always take her to the park. She liked to run off though which was annoying because we had to catch her
Megan Stumpfig October 14 at 12:01am
Yea one time I was walking her on the leash through the park, and she saw something and bolted at it, and pretty much just dragged me behind her though the grass and dirt since the leash was wrapped around my wrist! It was pretty scary and hurt pretty bad! I was so mad at her.
So I briefly remember when you fell and had to get stitches on your chin. What had happened exactly?

I was playing in tims room, and our cat iko was in his crib, so i slidded up a wood chair and tried to pick her up , and se jumped off my shoulder and i lost my balance and hit my chin right on the wood floor and it split open and i had to go get stitches. dad dropped u thomas anf michael and tim off at carols and dennis's and i went and got stitches. they glued it back together which was wierd.
